Pro Tip: How Do You Handle Your DSLR?
by Chew SC
You are in a crowd trying to capture that prize winning shot amongst a million other photographers. Your neighbours' elbows seem to appear in your face all the time attempting to knock your precious camera from your grip. Ever wondered if there's a better way to handle the camera? The answer is YES, there's a way to hold your camera securely, take a look the picture below.

Loop the strap to your wrist and your worries are over.
You can even go incognito by "hiding" the camera brand / logo. This is extremely useful when you are travelling abroad and/or in a rural place.
How to do this?
- Dangle the strap at the back of the camera
- Rest your right wrist in the middle of the loop
- Wrap your wrist counter clock-wise around the right side of the strap 2 – 3 times, depending on the length of the strap and you are all set.
Let's take a look at what's considered a good / right way to handle a camera:-
Rest the bottom of the camera on the fleshy part of your left palm and the fingers at the barrel to zoom and focus (in manual focus mode).

The above examples works for both landscape and portraiture modes.
What's not recommended are:
This position places a lot of stress on the right wrist and also prohibits flexibility to produce creative tilts. After a while, one may even get carpel tunnel syndrome!

Strap around the neck screams "tourist", "Come take my camera"!
No strap on the hand: "I want a new camera coz it's gonna be knocked off my hands and smash into pieces!
Grabbing the lens barrel will inhibit quick zooming / focusing
No one wants to know how your armpit smells!
