Creative Use Of Colours In Photography

Colour is a very powerful non-verbal form of communication that photographers can use to bring out or enhance the feeling and emotion of an image. Understanding colours and using it well in photography will make your photos stand out and deliver a message more powerful than words.
Different colours trigger different kinds of emotion; for example warm colours such as red, orange or yellow will give a feeling of excitement, warmth and power while blue produces a sense of peace, cool and calm feeling. Green gives a feeling of freshness and invigoration.
Employing colours creatively will bring good attention to the story you want to tell in your image. On a standard colour chart, complimentary colours are opposite one another, such as blue and orange, green and red and yellow and purple. These colours will compete for attention when placed side by side, so experiment with colours the next time you frame your shot to see the different effects they bring.
